Fort
Mill Fort Mill has over 5,600 residents and is close to two larger metropolitan cities - Charlotte and Rock Hill, South Carolina. The city gets its name from two early occurrences in its history - a fort and a mill. The fort was built in the late 1750s by South Carolina's governor to protect the Catawba Indians from attacks from neighboring tribes. In 1775 a gritsmill was built on Steele Creek. Residents of Fort Mill enjoy the Leroy Springs Recreation Complex which includes swimming, tennis courts, ball fields, billiard room, hiking/jogging trails, picnic areas and arts and craft instruction. The Museum of York County and Paramount's Carowinds Theme Park are also nearby.
